Though HID technology is firmly established and highly reliable with superior features,

 LED  would have few more convenient characteristics for motor vehicle applications.

 Current main problems of large power LED is cooling and high cost. 

 LED element needs to stay cool to provide expected performance and life time, but

 it has to be fixed on a circuit board and sealed with thick plastic cover - no exposure

 to external air. So, the cooling depends on heat-sink connected through its legs.

 However, rapid technical improvement and evolution will sooner or later resolve such

 problems.

HID Technology 101

 HID lighting system is simplified and described

 as an image on the right. It's a discharging in

 specific gas sealed in a glass tube or ball. The

 basic theory is the same as lightning.

 Halogen bulb is a conventional incandescent

 lighting system, which uses filament and obtain

 light from heat. Consequently, efficiency is very

 low as  most of energy is wasted as heat. The

 high power Halogen Bulb gets extremely hot, 

 and requires ceramic base to avoid melting.
